Branding a Coffee Bar

While Brownsburg Indiana has a couple of Starbucks and “Best Friends Coffee,” it didn’t have any Third-Wave coffee shops. Third-wave coffee is a movement treating coffee as an artisanal, high-quality craft rather than a commodity, focusing on the entire journey from farm to cup. Emerging in the early 2000s, it emphasizes direct trade, single-origin beans, lighter roasts to highlight natural flavors, and manual brewing techniques like pour-overs.

We wanted to create a name and a brand that felt like it would be home in the 1920s—really standing out from any local (or even Indianapolis) competitors. We suggested “Tempest,” as it evoked a sense of excitement. It also demanded a dramatic logo.

By selecting 20s-themed fonts and a simple illustrative style, we captured the right vibe for the venue. We also created a hand mark for use on clothing or merchandise:

And lastly, we came up with a fun marketing phrase to use on cups or on the wall of the shop:
